A man has been arrested after allegedly sexually abusing his girlfriend’s 18 month old daughter.
Alarm bells were raised when the toddler, named only as Sharon, was found unconscious by her grandmother in her mum’s flat in Cabiate, Italy.
The tot was rushed to hospital where she was found to have serious injuries as a result of having been sexually abused.
Autopsy results also revealed signs of her being “repeatedly hit” as injuries inflicted previously and which hadn’t been treated were also found on the child’s body.
An investigative judge who studied the report described it as “pure horror” as the toddler died of her injuries on January 11.
Police arrested suspect Gabriel Robert Marincat, 25, who had claimed on the day the toddler was hospitalised that her injuries were a result of a heater falling on top of her.
Marincat said he noticed she was having difficulty breathing and had been sick when arrested by police on the orders of the Como Public Prosecutor’s Office, who ordered an autopsy.
According to local media, he had lived with the child’s mum for three months.
The 25-year-old was reportedly left alone with the child on a few occasions while her unsuspecting mum was at work.
The forensics team said the medical report ruled out the possibility that the child’s previous injuries could have been accidental.
When he realised the police were looking for him, the suspect fled to his mother’s apartment in Lentate sul Seveso in the province of Monza and Brianza, according to reports.
The investigation continues.
